The right base depends entirely on what you're there for — theme parks, beach and culture, or a classic downtown city stay.
Abu Dhabi is spread across islands, waterfront districts and mainland neighbourhoods. There is no single hotel zone that is closest to everything. The best area is the one that cuts down the journeys you will make repeatedly, not the one that looks most central on a map.
For a first visit, decide whether your trip is mainly theme parks, beach and culture, general city sightseeing, business, or a short airport stop. That one choice usually narrows the hotel search faster than comparing dozens of properties.
Yas Island is the practical base for Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World, Yas Waterworld, SeaWorld Abu Dhabi and Yas Marina Circuit. Hotels are clustered around the island's entertainment districts and current Stay & Play packages can bundle selected hotel nights with theme-park access.
Choose Yas when the parks are the point of the trip, particularly with children. It is less convincing if most of your sightseeing will be Grand Mosque, Corniche, Qasr Al Watan and Saadiyat museums. You can still reach them easily by taxi, but you will be crossing the city repeatedly.
Saadiyat Island combines Abu Dhabi's strongest beach-resort cluster with the Cultural District. The main resorts are five-star, and the island gives you straightforward access to Louvre Abu Dhabi, Zayed National Museum, Natural History Museum and teamLab Phenomena.
It suits couples, resort-focused families and travellers who want slower days. The downside is price and the relative lack of cheap everyday dining outside the resorts. Read our Saadiyat hotel guide before paying a premium simply because a property is on the island.
The Corniche and downtown are the easiest areas to recommend when your itinerary is mixed. You get waterfront walks, a broad spread of hotel prices, central restaurants and fairly straightforward taxi access in multiple directions.
Do not confuse “central” with “walkable to every attraction”. Abu Dhabi's major sights are distributed across a large area. The Corniche itself is excellent for walking, while summer heat and wide roads make many inland journeys better by taxi.
Al Maryah works well for travellers who like a modern business-and-dining district rather than a beach resort. Four Seasons and Rosewood anchor the luxury hotel choice, The Galleria is close at hand, and the waterfront feels more compact than many parts of central Abu Dhabi.
It is a good fit for business trips, high-end dining and short city breaks. It is not the place to choose if a natural beach or theme-park convenience is your main priority.
For a late arrival, early departure or one-night stop, the airport side of the city can be smarter than crossing into downtown. Zayed International Airport has an airside transit hotel for eligible connecting or departing passengers, while landside airport-area hotels serve travellers who need a normal overnight after immigration.

Yas wins for theme-park logistics. Saadiyat is stronger for beach-resort families who also want museums. Grand Canal and selected city resorts work well for families who want pools and space without committing the whole trip to one island.

Abu Dhabi's official accommodation guidance includes several other useful districts. Al Zahiyah and central neighbourhoods can be good for value and everyday restaurants; Khalidiya is established and central; Al Raha is convenient for the airport side; Reem Island is increasingly self-contained but is more residential than visitor-focused.
These can be excellent choices when a particular hotel rate or local commitment pulls you there. For a first-time visitor with no special reason to choose them, Yas, Saadiyat, Corniche/downtown and Al Maryah are usually easier to compare.
Mark the four places you care about most on the Abu Dhabi map. If three sit in the same part of the emirate, stay near them. If they are spread out, choose the hotel experience you value most and accept that some taxi travel is part of Abu Dhabi.
