Visa & entry requirements

UAE entry rules depend on the passport you hold and the visa type you need, so use this page to understand the system — then verify your exact status with ICP before travel.

Abu Dhabi does not have its own separate tourist-visa system

Abu Dhabi is an emirate within the UAE, so the immigration permission you need is a UAE entry status rather than an “Abu Dhabi visa”. That matters if your itinerary starts in Dubai, crosses into Abu Dhabi by road, or lands at Zayed International Airport: you enter the UAE at the first immigration point, then travel domestically between emirates without a second tourist border check.

The confusing part is nationality. Some passport holders can enter visa-free or obtain permission on arrival, while others need an approved visa before travelling. Those eligibility lists can change, so I would never publish a static country list and tell you to trust it months later. Use the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP) and your airline’s current travel-document check for your exact passport.

What a tourist-visa application currently asks for

ICP’s current guidance includes a passport valid for at least six months, valid UAE health insurance and a travel ticket among the core requirements for tourist visas. Depending on the visa route, you may also need accommodation evidence, a photograph, sponsor or licensed-tourism-establishment information, or other supporting documents.

Common tourist-visa durations include 30, 60 and 90 days. A five-year multiple-entry tourist visa is a separate product with additional conditions, including financial evidence and limits on the length of each stay. Do not assume that a multi-entry label means unlimited residence.

Visa on arrival is passport-specific, not airport-specific

If your passport qualifies for visa-on-arrival treatment, the principle is tied to your nationality and current UAE rules — not to choosing Abu Dhabi instead of Dubai airport. Likewise, if your passport requires advance permission, changing the arrival airport does not remove that requirement.

Before paying for a non-refundable trip, check the current rule using the passport you will actually travel on. Dual nationals should not casually assume that the more favourable passport can be substituted at the last minute if ticket, visa or identity records were created under another document.

Transit is a different question from a normal visit

A traveller who stays airside during an international connection can face different requirements from someone who clears immigration to sleep in a hotel, meet friends or spend a day in Abu Dhabi. ICP lists transit permissions separately from normal tourist visas, including short-duration options in the wider visa system.

If you want to leave the airport, treat that as an entry question and verify it before departure. “I only have a long layover” is not itself permission to cross immigration.

Land entry and Oman side trips need their own check

Driving from Dubai to Abu Dhabi is domestic UAE travel, so there is no immigration border between the two emirates. Driving between the UAE and Oman is completely different: you cross an international border and need to confirm both UAE re-entry and Oman entry rules for your passport, vehicle and visa status.

This is especially important for single-entry visas. Leaving the UAE can end the permission you were using, so an Oman detour should never be added casually to an itinerary without checking re-entry eligibility.

Do not confuse visa validity, permitted stay and passport validity

These are three different clocks. A visa may have a window in which you must enter; your allowed stay starts under the conditions of that entry; and your passport has its own expiry date. Overstay penalties and extension rules depend on the permission you hold, so use the dates on your actual approval rather than a generic blog post.

Keep a saved copy of any visa approval, insurance, return/onward ticket and accommodation details somewhere you can access without mobile data. It is a small preparation step that removes a lot of airport stress.

My pre-flight check

  • Verify the current UAE rule for the exact passport you will present.
  • Confirm passport validity and whether your visa route requires health insurance, return travel or accommodation evidence.
  • Check the permitted stay on the approval itself — not what a friend received last year.
  • If you plan an Oman side trip, confirm re-entry to the UAE before leaving.
  • Re-check close to departure because immigration rules are one area where stale travel advice can become expensive very quickly.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa to visit Abu Dhabi?

It depends on your nationality — many visitors receive a visa on arrival or travel visa-free, while others need to apply for an e-visa in advance. Check the current rule for your specific passport before booking flights.

Can I get a UAE visa on arrival at Abu Dhabi airport?

Passport holders from eligible countries generally can, but the eligible-country list is set by the UAE government and reviewed periodically, so confirm your status ahead of travel rather than assuming.

Cheers, Carpe Diem & verify the passport before you verify the hotel! 🍻⏳🛂
