Reem Island has changed as a visitor stop

The old version of this guide treated Reem as 'mostly residential, maybe go for waterfront cafés'. That is no longer enough. Reem is still a real residential neighbourhood first, but Reem Mall, Snow Abu Dhabi and Reem Central Park have turned it into a useful family, shopping and indoor-entertainment destination. I would not rank it above the Grand Mosque, Louvre or Yas for a first visit, but I would absolutely consider it if those newer attractions match your interests.

Reem Mall is the main anchor

Reem Mall is now the easiest reason for a visitor to come to the island. Beyond retail and dining, the mall has a substantial entertainment mix including VOX Cinemas, family activity venues and Snow Abu Dhabi. That means Reem works particularly well in the hottest months or on a day when you want an indoor break. Check the mall's live event and opening-hour pages rather than assuming a temporary promotion is permanent.

Snow Abu Dhabi

Snow Abu Dhabi is the island's standout paid attraction, with a current official programme of 20 rides and attractions inside a climate-controlled snow park. Current published hours are 10am–10pm Sunday to Tuesday and 10am–midnight Wednesday to Saturday, although special dates can differ. If this is the main reason for your visit, book around the attraction rather than around the mall — ticket categories, clothing inclusions and age/height rules matter more than how long you plan to shop afterwards.

Reem Central Park and outdoor time

For a less commercial stop, Reem Central Park gives the island a genuine public-space dimension. It is better suited to a relaxed walk, playground time or an evening break than a checklist-style sightseeing visit. As everywhere in Abu Dhabi, the time of day matters: an outdoor park that feels easy in winter can be hard work in summer heat, so shift outdoor time toward mornings or evenings when necessary.

What the neighbourhood itself feels like

Reem is useful precisely because it does not feel like a purpose-built tourist precinct. Apartment towers, schools, supermarkets, cafés and parks dominate everyday life. If you are curious about contemporary Abu Dhabi beyond the landmark circuit, an evening here can be more revealing than another hotel lobby. Just keep expectations realistic: the residential streets themselves are not a heritage attraction, and there is no need to wander randomly looking for a 'secret' tourist quarter.

Getting there

The island is connected to the mainland by road bridges and sits only a short drive from downtown. Current Experience Abu Dhabi guidance puts Zayed International Airport at roughly 25–30 minutes by car depending on traffic. Taxi or ride-hailing is the simplest visitor option, especially if your goal is Reem Mall or Snow Abu Dhabi. If you are combining Reem with Al Maryah, the two islands are close enough to make a single evening or half-day plan sensible.

Do not book a Reem hotel that is not there

Current official tourism guidance says there are no hotels on Reem Island. That is worth stating clearly because accommodation search results can blur nearby Al Maryah and mainland properties into the same area. If you want to stay near Reem, look at Al Maryah or the downtown districts and check the actual map pin before booking. For most visitors, Reem is an outing rather than an accommodation base.

Who should put Reem on the itinerary

Prioritise Reem if you want Snow Abu Dhabi, a modern mall-and-entertainment day, family-friendly indoor time or a look at residential Abu Dhabi. Skip it if you have only a day or two and are still choosing between the city's major cultural and historic sights. My take: Reem is now a legitimate secondary destination, but it earns its place because of specific attractions — not because every island needs to appear on your checklist.
