What it is

teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi opened to the public on Saadiyat Island, spanning roughly 17,000 square metres of purpose-built exhibition space. Unlike a conventional gallery, the museum's large-scale installations respond to their environment and to visitors moving through them, so the experience shifts from one visit to the next rather than staying fixed.

It's teamLab's first bespoke, purpose-built site outside Asia, designed by Abu Dhabi-based MZ Architects, and sits at the entrance to Saadiyat from the main island — often the first cultural building visitors see as they cross onto Saadiyat.

Why it matters for the Cultural District

The opening marks the start of a busy stretch for Saadiyat's Cultural District, which already includes the Louvre Abu Dhabi and is adding the Zayed National Museum, the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, and the still-anticipated Guggenheim Abu Dhabi over the same broad period — see our separate story on those openings. Visit duration varies widely by pace, but most visitors spend between ninety minutes and two hours moving through the installations.
