The UAE’s giant AI infrastructure plan, originally unveiled as a 10-square-mile, 5-gigawatt campus in Abu Dhabi, is reportedly being reworked into a more distributed and hardened network after attacks on Gulf technology infrastructure — a potentially important shift for the emirate’s economy, energy system and long-term tech ambitions.


This is not just a data-centre story for chip engineers. The UAE–US AI Campus is one of the biggest infrastructure bets attached to Abu Dhabi’s push to become a global AI hub. If the design is materially redistributed or hardened, that can influence where investment lands, how much supporting power and network infrastructure is required, and how the emirate positions itself as a home for high-value computing.
The important distinction today is between what has been officially announced and what is now being reported. The original public plan remains clear: a 5GW campus in Abu Dhabi, with Stargate UAE as a 1GW cluster inside it. Reuters says officials are now rethinking that concentrated model after attacks on technology infrastructure elsewhere in the Gulf.
Reuters reported on 11 September that the UAE is revising the planned architecture of the project after attacks by Iran damaged US-linked technology infrastructure in the Gulf. Citing people familiar with the discussions, the report says the original single-campus concept could become a network of facilities distributed across the UAE to reduce the risk of one strike or disruption affecting a large share of national AI capacity.
The same report says resilience options under consideration include locating some infrastructure underground, using blast-resistant construction and integrating stronger air-defence protection. Those are significant details, but they have not yet been published as a replacement masterplan by the Abu Dhabi Government, G42 or the other Stargate UAE partners.
When Stargate UAE was launched in May 2025, the Abu Dhabi Media Office described the wider UAE–US AI Campus as a 5-gigawatt AI infrastructure campus spanning roughly 10 square miles in Abu Dhabi. It was described as the largest deployment of its type outside the United States.
The official plan said the campus would combine AI data-centre capacity, regional computing resources and a science park, with power supplied through a mix of nuclear, solar and natural gas. That scale means changes to the site model are not a small architectural tweak; they could reshape supporting infrastructure across multiple locations.
It is easy to blur the names. Stargate UAE is the 1GW AI compute cluster being built by G42 with OpenAI, Oracle, NVIDIA, Cisco and SoftBank involved in the alliance. The UAE–US AI Campus is the larger 5GW infrastructure framework in which Stargate UAE was originally positioned.
At launch, officials said the first 200MW of Stargate UAE was expected to go live in 2026. More recent G42 material continues to describe Stargate UAE as part of the wider 5GW campus, so residents should not interpret the Reuters report as evidence that the programme has been cancelled. The reported issue is how and where the capacity is built.
AI infrastructure is unusually concentrated, power-hungry and valuable. Large clusters depend not only on servers and advanced chips but on substations, cooling, fibre links, water or other cooling systems, security and highly reliable electricity. A single huge site can be efficient, but concentration also creates a larger single point of failure.
Reuters says attacks on data-centre infrastructure in the Gulf changed the risk calculation. A distributed design could trade some economies of scale for redundancy: if one site is disrupted, other locations may continue operating.
No revised site map has been published, so there is no basis yet for claiming particular neighbourhoods will gain or lose facilities. But a distributed build would broaden the list of local questions worth watching: where new power connections are needed, which industrial zones get fibre and utility upgrades, where technical jobs cluster, and how construction demand is spread.
For Abu Dhabi’s economy, the project is also bigger than construction. Official launch material framed the AI campus as infrastructure for healthcare, energy, finance, transport and scientific research. If those ambitions hold, the long-term local impact will depend on whether the compute capacity attracts companies, researchers and skilled workers rather than functioning mainly as remote server capacity.
A 5GW computing programme is an energy project as much as a technology project. The original Abu Dhabi announcement said the campus would use nuclear, solar and natural gas to minimise emissions. If capacity is split across several facilities, the engineering challenge becomes not only securing enough electricity but doing so reliably across multiple sites.
That makes grid investment, generation, transmission and cooling infrastructure part of the story residents and local businesses should watch. None of the sources checked today publishes a new energy allocation for a redistributed campus, so any claim about the final power mix would be premature.
