A free community open day takes over Zayed Sports City today with racquet sports, fitness, family activities, entertainment and a huge automotive display — but two official listings currently disagree on the event hours.
If you are in Abu Dhabi today and want something easy, active and family-friendly without buying another attraction ticket, Zayed Sports City has a useful option. Its Open Day is a one-evening community event built around trying sports, exploring the venue and hanging around for entertainment rather than watching one fixed headline show.
The most important planning detail is also the one most likely to trip people up: two official visitor-facing pages currently publish different hours. Zayed Sports City — the organiser and venue — says 4pm to 10pm. Experience Abu Dhabi says 5pm to 11pm. I would plan around the organiser’s current page, register before leaving and give yourself enough flexibility that a late programme change does not wreck the rest of the evening.
The event is part community sports sampler, part family evening and part venue showcase. Zayed Sports City says it is celebrating the UAE’s Year of the Family and is inviting visitors to try activities across its outdoor pitches and courts rather than simply tour the facilities.
The official programme highlights tennis, padel and pickleball activations, broader sports sessions, fitness experiences, family activities and entertainment. That makes it particularly useful for travellers with children or mixed-interest groups: one person can try a sport while somebody else treats the evening more like a casual community festival.
Zayed Sports City’s current English event page gives 4:00pm–10:00pm. Its Arabic event page shows the same window. Experience Abu Dhabi, the emirate’s official tourism site, currently lists 5:00pm–11:00pm.
That does not mean one page is necessarily “wrong” forever — event operations can be updated — but it is a clear reason not to rely on an old screenshot or social caption. For a same-day event, the venue/organiser page is the source I would check immediately before departure. If it changes, use the newest Zayed Sports City instruction.
Zayed Sports City’s event page has a live registration form and explicitly asks visitors to register. Experience Abu Dhabi also links visitors through a “Book now” action. Even though the tourism listing describes the event as free, free does not always mean “walk in without admin”.
My practical move would be to complete the Zayed Sports City registration before getting into a taxi or car, save any confirmation that arrives, and use the same email/phone details you can access easily on the day.
This is not being presented as a tournament. The event language is about discovering something new and getting active, with tennis, padel, pickleball and fitness experiences among the headline activities. That is a much friendlier proposition for a visitor who has never played pickleball or only vaguely remembers how to hold a tennis racquet.
Wear something you can move in and sensible shoes. I would not turn up dressed for a formal Abu Dhabi evening and then be annoyed that the interesting part involves a court.
Zayed Sports City says the Open Day will include a display of around 150 automotive collectibles. That is substantial enough to be a reason to visit even if your family is divided on the merits of padel.
The organiser does not publish a detailed vehicle list on the event page we checked, so I would treat “150 automotive collectibles” as the promise and avoid assuming a particular model, marque or celebrity car will be there unless Zayed Sports City confirms it separately.
Experience Abu Dhabi lists live entertainment, food and beverage options and partner activations alongside the sports. Zayed Sports City likewise frames the day around entertainment and family fun, so there is no need for every member of a group to participate in every activity.
That also changes how I would schedule dinner. Rather than booking a tightly timed restaurant across town at 7pm, I would either eat at the event if the current food options suit or leave enough buffer to decide after seeing how long the family actually wants to stay.
Zayed Sports City is on the Abu Dhabi mainland and is easiest for many visitors by taxi, ride-hailing or private car. If you are staying around the Corniche, Saadiyat or Yas Island, allow proper cross-city travel time rather than treating it like an attraction you can casually walk to from the nearest hotel district.
Because this is a free community event on a Saturday evening, pick-up and drop-off areas can be busier than normal. I would pin the exact Zayed Sports City destination in the app, keep the organiser’s page open, and be prepared for a short walk within the complex to the outdoor pitches and courts.
If I were going as a traveller, I would register first, arrive towards the beginning of the organiser’s current 4pm window, do the sports activations before everyone gets tired, then use the car display, food and entertainment as the looser second half of the visit.
Families with younger children may prefer to leave before the late-evening rush. Couples or groups of adults can comfortably treat it as an early-evening stop before dinner elsewhere. Either way, do not build the night around the 11pm finish shown on one listing without checking the venue’s latest information.
