Louvre Abu Dhabi Opens Spices and Wonders on 14 October: Tickets, Hours and Visitor Tips

A new museum exhibition follows Indian Ocean trade routes through spices, textiles and ceramics — with a free, bookable pre-opening conversation on 13 October.

Checked 9 October 2026: The exhibition opens 14 October 2026 and runs until 14 February 2027. The separate 13 October evening talks are free but require booking; that is not the exhibition opening date.

What opens and when

Louvre Abu Dhabi opens Spices and Wonders: Sailing the Indian Ocean on Wednesday 14 October 2026. Its advertised run ends on 14 February 2027. That gives visitors more than a single festival weekend: you can fit the exhibition into an autumn city break, a winter holiday or a stopover on Saadiyat Island. The dates come from the museum itself, rather than a third-party events listing. If you are visiting on 13 October, the exhibition has not yet opened to general museum visitors, but there is a separate free preview-related talk that evening. Do not mistake the talk date for the gallery opening.

What the exhibition is about

The Indian Ocean was a route for people, ideas and goods long before modern airlines and container ports. This exhibition traces historic connections between Africa, the Middle East, Europe, South Asia and Southeast Asia, from antiquity through the seventeenth century. The objects and themes include spices, textiles and ceramics as well as navigation and cultural exchanges. It is an especially appealing stop for travellers curious about why Gulf cities, ports and cuisines developed as crossroads of Indian Ocean trade. Rather than treating different civilisations as isolated islands, the curators place their contacts at the centre of the story.

Who organised the show

The exhibition is developed with the Musée national des arts asiatiques – Guimet in Paris. Louvre Abu Dhabi identifies Dr Guilhem André and Dr Claire Déléry among its principal curators, with additional curatorial support. The partnership matters because the exhibition is not simply a generic display of exotic spices: it brings together museum expertise on Asian ceramics, maritime history and the broader art history of exchange. A second presentation is planned for the Guimet in Paris from 12 May to 6 September 2027, although Abu Dhabi visitors should book against the Abu Dhabi dates only.

Free curatorial evening on 13 October

A separate curatorial and artists’ talk takes place Tuesday 13 October, 6pm–8pm, in the museum auditorium. It is listed as free, but advance booking is required; seats are allocated first-come, first-served. The advertised first conversation runs 6pm–7pm, followed by an intermission and an artists’ conversation from 7.10pm–8pm. This is a very good way for travellers already in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday evening to gain context before the exhibition opens on Wednesday. A free event does not guarantee a seat: check the official reservation page, and do not assume general gallery admission is included or that the exhibition galleries are already open.

Ticket prices and admission

The Louvre Abu Dhabi visitor page lists AED 70 general admission for adults aged 18+. The museum lists free admission for visitors under 18 and certain eligible groups, including qualifying UAE senior nationals/residents, people of determination with a companion, and specified professional or membership passes. Confirm your eligibility and whether the exhibition is included with your particular ticket at the official checkout; special events and experiences may have separate terms. Do not use a vague advertised “free museum” claim to plan the day. For booked talks or guided activities, follow the event-specific page instead of relying only on the museum’s standard ticket.

Opening hours: galleries versus the dome

The museum currently advertises opening hours from 10am, but the important distinction is between the galleries and the building beneath its famous dome. Galleries and exhibitions close at 6.30pm Monday–Thursday and 8.30pm Friday–Sunday, with last gallery admission 30 minutes earlier. The public dome area is advertised as open until midnight, last entry at 11pm. A late-night photo under the dome is therefore not interchangeable with an evening visit to the new exhibition. Check special-event hours and any temporary gallery installation closures on the date you intend to visit.

Where it is and how to arrive

The museum is in the Saadiyat Cultural District, on Saadiyat Island, not in the city’s Corniche district or on Yas Island. Allow transfer time from your hotel, and check your route before booking a timed activity. Taxis and ride-hailing services may be convenient for point-to-point transfers; public transport routes can change and should be checked with the Abu Dhabi mobility provider for the day of travel. If you are combining the museum with Zayed National Museum or Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, account for walking distances, individual opening times and separately managed admission rules. Avoid planning the entire district as if it were a single ticketed building.

How to plan a rewarding visit

For an exhibition-focused visit, begin with the galleries while they are open, and leave time afterwards for the dome and the waterfront views. Reading the curatorial introduction first helps visitors connect a textile, ceramic vessel or spice cargo to an actual route across the ocean. Families may want to pair a shorter exhibition visit with the Children’s Museum, but its exhibition is a different activity and may require specific admission arrangements. If you are travelling with limited time, choose one or two cultural stops rather than racing through every Saadiyat museum in a single afternoon. Allow a buffer for security, tickets and any temporary gallery closures.

A traveller-friendly one-day idea

A simple plan is to arrange a Saadiyat transfer in late morning, visit the exhibition around lunch, break for food and take in the dome before leaving for another Abu Dhabi attraction. If you prefer late afternoon, check the day of the week first: on a Thursday galleries close earlier than on a Friday. Guests arriving in Abu Dhabi during the 13 October evening should decide between the pre-opening talk and a standard museum visit based on actual availability, not assume both can be squeezed into the same time slot. The next day, 14 October, is the official opening date for the exhibition.

Dates, bookings and sources

As of 9 October 2026, the exhibition is scheduled for 14 October 2026–14 February 2027. The free auditorium talks are advertised for 13 October, 6pm–8pm, with booking required. Ticket categories, gallery hours and individual programme times can change, so make the organiser’s official pages your final check, especially if you are flying in specifically for an event. The links below distinguish the exhibition listing, the talk booking notice and the visitor information page. This guide does not claim real-time ticket or seat availability.
