Whether you're self-catering an apartment stay or just stocking up on snacks and water, Abu Dhabi's supermarket scene is easy to navigate once you know the basics.
International and regional supermarket chains operate throughout the city, from large hypermarkets inside malls like Yas Mall and Marina Mall to smaller neighbourhood branches and convenience stores open long hours, often 24 hours in busier areas. Selection is generally excellent, reflecting the city's international population, with a genuinely wide range of imported goods alongside local and regional products.
Prices are broadly comparable to, or a little higher than, Western supermarket prices for imported goods, and noticeably cheaper for regional produce and staples.
Most residential and hotel apartment buildings have a small grocery store or supermarket within easy walking distance, useful for topping up water, snacks and breakfast basics without a special trip. Larger hypermarkets are the better choice for a proper self-catering shop, particularly if you want a specific imported brand or a wider produce selection.
Alcohol is not sold in ordinary supermarkets — it's only available through licensed hotel and restaurant venues, or specific licensed retail outlets for residents with the appropriate permit.
